The Watchtower

The Watchtower in orbit.

The Watchtower is a satellite orbiting Earth, and the true headquarters of the Justice League. League members are transported to the Watchtower from the Hall of Justice[1] and the Cave via Zeta-Tubes.[2]

Facilities[]

Watchtower mission room

The mission room.

  • Mission room: Located at the very top of the Watchtower under a transparent dome, the mission room is a large open plan room. It houses three Zeta-Tubes and is equipped with holographic displays. Parts of the floor are able to elevate to create a raised platform and steps in the middle of the room, and a table and chairs can be brought in for meetings.[3]
  • Atrium & memorial: A large, open space housing several open floors in front of the Watchtower's largest windows. The atrium contains a garden with a number of trees, and birds living there.[4] Following the deaths of members of the Justice League and the Team, a memorial was established in the garden, with holographic statues of the fallen.[5]
Watchtower conference room

The conference room.

  • Conference room: Located on one of the levels in the atrium, the conference room contains a large meeting table with holographic interfaces. The room has multiple large doors, which can be sealed for privacy.[4]
  • Medical bay: The Watchtower has an advanced medical bay. As well as standard beds, it is equipped with solar pods for Kryptonians.[6]
  • Cargo bays and supply rooms: The Watchtower has numerous cargo and supply rooms of various sizes. Some are equipped with a Zeta-Tube. Some have space doors.[3]

Systems[]

Watchtower atrium

The atrium.

  • Sensors: Watchtower sensors were able to detect the approach of the Warworld,[7] pick up boom tube activity on Earth,[8] and found the Undersea beneath Xebel.[9]
  • Communications: Watchtower comm systems allow real-time communication with the Javelin even when it is on the other side of the galaxy. It needs a receiver on the other side though; even communication with neighbor planet Mars was dependent on the M'arzz-Earth Communications Satellite.[10]
  • Internal security: The Watchtower features internal security systems, including cameras.[11] It was not particularly difficult for Red Tornado to wirelessly override them and allow the Team clandestine access.[3]
  • Engines: The Watchtower has some form of propulsion that allows it to maintain and change orbit. The Watchtower must move above the Zeta-Shield to allow Zeta-transport to or from somewhere other than Earth.[12]
  • Cloaking: The Watchtower inherited cloaking technology from its Green Lantern days, which allowed it to remain secret from Earth's population for years.[13]

The Watchtower is not armed.[14]

History[]

Early history[]

When the Justice League decided to secretly establish an orbital base, they turned to the Green Lantern Corps for help. They gave the League a decommissioned Green Lantern base station that had been constructed from an asteroid. Hal Jordan and John Stewart towed it into Earth's orbit, and the station was modified to suit the League's needs, including the installation of Zeta-Tubes.[13] The League started operating out of the Watchtower after their base in Mount Justice was compromised. Its existence has been kept from public knowledge,[1] with the aid of cloaking capabilities.[13]

Em'ree J'onzz contacts the Watchtower, relieved to learn her uncle is alright and informs the Leaguers of the explosion. Cyborg attempts to lock on to their signal until their connection is cut off by the destruction of the M'arzz-Earth Communications Satellite. Background information[]

  • The first JLA base to use the name "Watchtower" was built on the moon's surface during the Grant Morrison run of the JLA series. Earlier bases in Earth's orbit were called the Justice League Satellite; they returned to a satellite after Infinite Crisis.
  • This marks the fifth animated appearance of the Watchtower. It appeared in the DCAU, there were two: one in Justice League (which was destroyed in the finale) and a new model in Justice League Unlimited. It also appeared in The Batman, Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths and Batman: The Brave and the Bold
